The region's roadways will be crowded this Thanksgiving holiday. AAA Mid-Atlantic says slightly more than 1 million people in the Metro D.C. area will be traveling 50 miles or more during Thanksgiving week. That's a modest 1.3 percent increase over those who traveled last year.
"One out of every five Washingtonians will be traveling this Thanksgiving," says John Townsend with AAA Mid Atlantic. He also says about 977,000 — 9 out of 10 people — will travel by car.
This marks the fourth year in a row that the D.C. region will see an increase in the number of residents that travel during Thanksgiving. This trend also holds true across the nation.
More than 90 percent of those traveling will do so by automobile, which is up slightly — about 1.1 percent — from last year. Conversely, air travel is down 1.3 percent.
AAA estimates folks will not travel as far and will spend a bit less this Thanksgiving holiday.
