The D.C. flag isn't given the same respect by the military as state flags from around the country.

D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says she wants the District flag to be recognized at military ceremonies and other events.

Norton wants the District's flag, with its recognizable three stars and two bars, to be on display when the flags of the 50 states are raised during military ceremonies.

Norton asked Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, to include a provision about the D.C. flag in this year's Defense Authorization bill.

The non-voting member of Congress made the request after she was contacted by a District resident whose son had recently graduated from the Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago. During the ceremony, state flags were displayed for each of the graduates, except for Jonathon Rucker, who is from D.C.

Norton hopes Congress will fix this, she said this week. She also asked President Obama once again to sign a measure requiring all federal agencies to fly D.C.'s flag when all of the 50 state flags are on display.
