Virginia's voter turnout is expected to be robust during today's general election.

Voter turnout projections in Virginia are on track to meet turnout statistics in 2008. Virginia's 13 electoral votes are up for grabs, and the outcome depends heavily on who shows up to vote, campaign officials say.

If women and minority voters show up, President Barack Obama may win. But if white voters and men dominate the turnout, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney may take the commonwealth.

The number of voters expected today should be similar to the turnout in 2008, says Alexandria Registrar Tom Parkins.

"I would think it would be similar to 2004, and Virginia is a battleground state," he says. "So there's just been an incredible amount of media and campaigning taking place at all levels in the state.:

Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland has seen record number of people turn out for in-person absentee balloting at the South County Government Center, he says.

"There's a not only willingness to concentrate but an urgency, and there's a message there," Hyland says. "I mean, people are focused on this election, and no matter who they are supporting they want to vote for their candidate." All of that means Virginia could see record turnout today.
