Maryland's Gun Carry Permit Law Under Review In Court

Play associated audio

A federal court is trying to decide if a Maryland resident's right to keep a gun in their homes for self defense ends in their front door, according to the Washington Post.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit is currently weighing arguments in a lawsuit seeking to ease restrictions on carrying guns in public spaces in Maryland. The case focuses on Maryland's requirement that those seeking a permit to carry a gun in public must provide state politicians with good and substantial reason to do so.

Those seeing to overturn the law cite the Supreme Court's ruling four years ago in the case of D.C.'s gun ban that a person has the right to own a firearm. They argue that if you have that right, there's no need to prove you're entiteld to that right. Attorneys for the state of Maryland argue that the law was enacted expressly to reduce gun violence in public places.
