Maryland Rep. Uses Her Campaigning Chops Away From Home

Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards (D) spent part of this week on the campaign trail in the Northeast even though she's got her own campaign going on in Maryland.

Edwards is only in her second term in office, but she's co-chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's 'Red to Blue' program, a program focused on putting Democrats back in power in the House. In that capacity, she's been touring the country raising money for the party, coaching candidates and also showing up at some events lending an air of seniority to challengers.

Edwards was in upstate New York recently helping a few Democrats campaign, but she says her work for the party is also work for her Maryland constituents.

"But also taking my responsibility as a Democrat and as a leader in the Congress to make sure that we get the House back," she says. "Because that serves the interests of the people of the 4th District."

Due to redistricting in Maryland, Edwards now has 285,000 new voters in the more conservative Anne Arundel County. She's been juggling campaigning for her own seat in her state with campaigns elsewhere.

"I've been spending tons of time there as I've done from every sort of festival and county fair and everything else," Edwards says.

House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was also in upstate New York. His trip looked a lot like Edwards', although his was focused on flipping some blue seats to red and trying to maintain control of the House.
