Pull tabs are an instant lottery game that can be dispensed by a machine. Maryland veterans' groups will be able to install the machines under the new law.

The lone part of the gaming expansion bill passed in Maryland earlier this year that doesn't need approval of state voters goes into effect next week. Veterans' organizations in Maryland can begin applying for a license to have up to five instant lottery pull-tab machines at their facilities.

The pull-tab machines dispense gambling tickets that let customers lift perforated tabs to determine if they've won various amounts of money. But it is expected to take months before the machines at veterans' clubs are playable because regulations still need to be adopted.

The Maryland provision, which takes effect Monday, was included in the gambling expansion measure passed in a special session in August. While the main components of the measure to allow table games like blackjack at casinos and a casino site in Prince George's County require voter approval in November, the provision for veterans does not.

The law does not include the Eastern Shore, where slot machines are already allowed at veterans' organizations. It also does not include Montgomery County.
