Attorneys for a former University of Virginia lacrosse player are appealing his second-degree murder conviction in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend, according to the Associated Press.

George Huguely's attorneys filed the notice of appeal this week in Charlottesville Circuit Court. Huguely was convicted earlier this year in the May 2010 slaying of ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love. Huguely was sentenced in August to 23 years in prison.

The attorneys for Huguely did not outline a basis for their appeal. A trial judge rejected a number of claims for appeal including improper jury instructions when Huguely sought a new trial in August.

Huguely has been transferred to state custody, Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor tells AP.
