Kaine Parts With President On Tax Plan

It's no surprise Republicans in the region oppose the president's proposal to increase taxes on wealthier Americans, but even Obama supporter and Virginia Democratic Senate candidate Tim Kaine is against the idea.

Republicans by and large oppose any tax increases. So the president knows he's unlikely to get them on board with letting the Bush-era tax cuts expire for people making more than $250,000 a year. But he's not getting support for his plan from Kaine either.

Kaine, a former governor of Virginia, wants the threshold for a tax increase set at $500,000, which he calls a  balanced approach.

Virginia is a key state for the president to win in November and Kaine is in the midst of a neck-and-neck fight with former Sen. George Allen (R. It's unclear how their differences on tax policy may play in the state.

Republicans say any tax increases during this fragile economic recovery will punish small businesses, while the president is claiming his proposal would shield 97 percent of small businesses from a tax hike.
