Maryland Del. Tiffany Alston (D-Prince George's County) has been found guilty of misdemeanor theft and misconduct in office. A jury in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court reached the guilty verdict this morning less than a day after beginning deliberations.
The allegations against Alston involved payment of an employee at her law office. State prosecutors say Alston inappropriately paid the employee about $800 in state funds by claiming she was a member of the delegate's legislative staff.
Alston's attorneys argued the law office employee did perform legislative work and said prosecutors failed to prove otherwise.
Alston is accused in a separate case of using campaign funds to pay for wedding-related expenses.
