Alexandria Firefighters Battle Two-Alarm Storage Unit Blaze

Alexandria Fire and EMS personnel are still on the scene of a two-alarm fire at a self storage unit earlier this a.m. Firefighters responded to the scene on the 4900 block of Eisenhower Avenue shortly before 4 a.m. this morning after a report of a fire in a storage unit, according to department spokesman Brian Hricik. 

"When we arrived on the scene, we saw heavy fire and smoke showing, and we gained access and started to eliminate the fire," Hricik says.  The two-alarm fire proved difficult to extinguish, however, as it spread from one storage unit to another. 

"We had to gain entry to each individual unit, knocking down one at a time," Hricik says. 

A few firefighters were treated at the scene for what officials originally suspected could have been chemical inhalation. The Haz Mat unit called to the scene determined there was nothing hazardous inhaled by the firefighters, however. 

"Once they were rehydrated, they returned to work," says Hricik. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
