The Caroline County, Va. farm where champion racehorse Secretariat was born is headed to auction, according to the Associated Press.

The 360-acre Meadow Event Park site is being sold at foreclosure after the State Fair of Virginia defaulted on more than $80 million in financing from creditors and was forced to liquidate. The auction is scheduled for Tuesday.

Kate Chenery Tweedy, whose family owned the farm for many years, and other family members are hopeful the new owners keep the equestrian tradition alive as well as resurrect the annual State Fair of Virginia, she tells AP.

Tweedy's mother, Penny Chenery, owned Secretariat and the rolling green acres where the thoroughbred was born. The property still includes the foaling shed and yearling barn used by the Triple Crown winner.

State Fair of Virginia Inc. acquired the property in 2003 for $5.3 million and moved the agricultural attraction up the interstate from Richmond. Chenery's family sold the farm in 1979.
