Today a lot more children will be on their bikes because its National Bike to School Day. At the Takoma Children's School in Northwest D.C., dozens of preschoolers came to school on their bikes, trikes or foot scooters to mark the event.
They weren't alone. For the first time ever, communities, bicycle groups and schools nationwide came together to celebrate student-powered transportation over the fossil fuel alternative and also promote traffic and bike safety.
This was evidenced by the fact that many of the Takoma school youngsters wore their helmets and some even had reflective vests. According to 4-year-old Kayo, the gear is necessary "because safety is important."
Parent Rachel Lettre, an avid bike commuter herself, helped organize the event at the Takoma school as a way "to find safe routes to school as summer approaches."
Schools throughout the metro D.C. area are participating in today's activities.
