Six marijuana growers have been tapped to set up shop in D.C. on the same day a store catering to people who want to grow medical marijuana is opening in the District. D.C. began reviewing applications from potential cultivators earlier this year.

In the weGrow store on Rhode Island Avenue NE, shelves are lined with row upon row of plant vitamins and food, heat lamps, ventilation and hydroponic systems, and books about growing your own stash of medical marijuana.

The store, which is known nationally at "the Walmart of weed," opens its doors for the first time this morning; it's the first weGrow location on the East Coast.

D.C. officials have chosen six growers who will be eligible to apply for permits to grow as many as 95 medical marijuana plants at a time; all are located in Northeast D.C. According to NBC Washington, those growers are Abatin Wellness Center of Queens Chapel Road NE; Montana Apothecary dba Alternative Solutions of 24th Place NE; District Growers of Evarts Street NE; Holistic Remedies of Fenwick Street NE; Phyto Management, LLC of Benning Road NE; Venture Forth dba Center City of Channing Street NE.

The first, Abatin, is parly owned by talk show host Montel Williams. All of the businesses will need to now obtain business licenses and building permits from the city before becoming operational. There were 28 applications reviewed in all by the District's Department of Health. Department head Mohammed Akhter told the Washington Post that applicants were chosen based on their ability to grow "quality" marijuna in a "safe environment."

All of the cultivation spots are located in Ward 5, something that community activists in the area have not been a fan of. Ward 5 activist Marcus Robinson dropped by to make sure WeGrow wasn't something shady

"There's no medical marijuana growing right now -- there's just tomatoes and cucumbers and stuff so, I just wanted to make sure it was something legitimate in my neighborhood. That's all," says Robinson.

Maryland also allows medical marijuana for certain medical purposes, as do 15 other states.
