Minivan Slams Through Window Of Day Care Center

Driver is only one hurt in strange parking accident

A normally quiet neighborhood in Northeast D.C. near Catholic University was anything but serene yesterday after a freak parking accident.

Sheets of plywood now cover the front window of an adult daycare center in Brookland, a minivan slammed through that window yesterday. The elderly driver was trying to parallel park.

This witness, who asked not to be identified, was among scores of passersby who ran for their lives to avoid that minivan, which ripped off a metal bench, and carried it through the building.

"His foot must have hit the pedal, and he went jack-knifed into this storefront," she said. "He almost hit this baby."

First responders had to shut off gas at a restaurant next door and evacuate the restaurant to avoid an explosion. They took the driver out through the plate glass window and through the minivan. Only the driver was hurt.

Sarah Brown, who works for the daycare center, says that it was lucky for all involved that it happened on the Sunday, when the center was empty.

"Some of our consumers are deaf, blind and developmentally-delayed. One, they would never have known what was happening, and two they wouldn't have been able to move out of the way."

She says that the 15 effected clients will go on outings this week to the cherry blossoms while repairs are made to the building.
