An emergency responder surveys the scene of an accident between a bicycle and a tractor trailer on U Street NW this morning.

A serious accident between a bicyclist and a tractor trailer closed down U Street NW between 10th and 12th streets NW for more than an hour this morning.

Witnesses tell WAMU 88.5 that the bicyclist, whose mangled red Capital Bikeshare bicycle was sitting in the middle of U Street after the accident, was taken away in an ambulance, but police say the victim will likely pull through and the injuries sustained were less serious than initially believed.

The accident happened between 11th and 12 streets NW. It's not clear who was at fault, and the official condition of the bicyclist, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, is still unknown. About a dozen police officers were still on scene at about 9:45 a.m.

Tim Hull, who was riding his bike to work past the scene this morning, noted that the bicycle was in pretty bad condition.

"It's definitely causing me some concern; I ride my bike to and from work every day," he says. "This is a little troubling … the bicycle is in the middle of the street, so it kind of makes me wonder.

The investigation into what happened is still ongoing, and there is no official word on who was at fault.
