Maryland Senate To Debate Same-Sex Marriage Bill Today

The Maryland Senate is slated to take up a bill legalizing same-sex marriage later today, according to Associated Press.

Republican leaders asked that discussion of the bill and potential amendments be postponed until today. Senate President Mike Miller (D) said his chamber could gather into the evening as senators consider the bill, which barely passed the House of Delegates last week.

Opponents have offered an amendment to change the bill's effective date and say they have asked Attorney General Doug Gansler for an opinion on the constitutionality of amendments added to the House version of the bill.

One amendment forbids gay unions from taking place until any possible voter referendum on the measure has been decided. Last year, the Senate passed a similar measure by 25 to 21. Miller said he does not believe any of votes have changed in his chamber.
