George Huguely Trial Begins Today In Charlottesville

Former UVA lacrosse player charged with murder of Yeardley Love

Update, 2:00 p.m.: George Huguely V, of Chevy Chase, Md., pleaded not guilty Monday in Charlottesville Circuit Court to first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, breaking and entering, grand larceny and murder in the commission of a felony. Twelve jurors and three alternates are to be selected from 160 people. No jurors were seated as of midday.

Yeardley Love was found dead in her apartment on May 3, 2010. Police said Huguely told investigators he kicked in Love's bedroom door and then shook her, causing her head to hit a wall several times. 

Attorneys for the 24-year-old Huguely contend the 22-year-old Love, of Cockeysville, Md., died accidentally, according to the Associated Press.

 

Original Story: The murder trial for former University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely begins today in Charlottesville, Va.

Hughely, who is 24 and grew up in Chevy Chase, Md., is accused of killing Yeardley Love, of Cockeysville, Md. The two had dated at UVA and played on the lacrosse teams.

In May of 2010, Love's roommate returned to the off-campus apartment they shared and found her face down on a pillow in a pool of blood. Police say Huguely told them in a videotaped statement he kicked down Love's bedroom door and fought with her. 

Prosecutors say Huguely slammed her head into the wall several time. Authorities say Love died of head trauma, but Huguely's defense team argues that Love may have died from an irregular heartbeat caused partially from taking the prescription drug Adderall and drinking alcohol.

Huguely is charged with first-degree murder. The charge carries a possible life sentence.

As a result of the case, UVA has changed some of its safety policies and the state of Virginia has strengthened its protective order laws. Jury selection is set to begin today and the entire trial is expected to last two weeks.
