The number of Maryland Terrapin sports teams could be reduced next year in order to balance the unversity's athletics budget. 

The University of Maryland could be cutting as many as eight athletic teams by next summer, according to a report in the college's newspaper, The Diamondback. 

A university commission charged with reducing the university's $4.7 million athletics budget deficit, which is said to on track to triple by 2017, has recommended cutting the men's cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, tennis, and swimming and diving teams, as well as the women's acrobatics and tumbling, swimming and diving, and water polo teams. 

The decision affects about 166 student athletes, and about 12 coaches, perhaps more if more teams need to be eliminated. University President Wallace Loh is expected to make a decision on the recommendations in the coming weeks, but will meet with coaches and student athletes in the meantime.

Students at the university aren't taking these plans lying down. Several teams have already turned to the web to bolster support for keeping their teams intact:
