After months of meetings both private and public with Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier and other high-ranking police department officials, members of the transgender community will launch highly visible protests this week to underscore their dissatisfaction with how the MPD handles crimes against transgender people.
The past few months have brought numerous attacks on transgender women, at least two of them fatal.
The transgender day of action is Thursday, and activists say they will highlight police bias and even violence against transgender people in Washington, D.C. They will picket police department headquarters, the U.S. Attorney's office and city hall.
They will also deliver a set of demands for changes in police procedures and investigations of crimes involving transgender people.
