Six Shootings In D.C. On Halloween

Update: 4 p.m.: Police say the teenager shot Monday night during the Halloween festivities in Georgetown remains in critical condition. A total of six people were shot last night in separate incidents across the District.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier says she doesn’t believe the shootings were connected to any Halloween celebrations. Rather, the Chief says there seems to be an uptick in gun violence every year at around this time: “When the weather changes and the coats and the jackets and the baggy, bulky clothing come on -- it’s easier to conceal a handgun and go out in public -- and I’ve always said -- having a handgun available when an argument occurs – always is a recipe for disaster," says Lanier.

Lanier says a 24-year-old man was arrested after the shooting in Georgetown and charged with carrying a pistol without a license.

Original story: At least six people were shot on Halloween night in the District, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. One of them, a juvenile shot in Georgetown at about 11 p.m., is in critical condition, according to NBC Washington.

The boy was shot in the head while on the 2800 block of M Street NW. Earlier in the evening, another juvenile was shot on M Street NE, near New York Avenue.

 In another incident at Georgia Ave and Decatur streets NW, a boy was shot in the knee and a woman was shot in the thigh, according to the Associated Press. 

The two other shooting victims were a woman shot in the ankle on Crittenden St. NW and a man shot in the foot on Southern Ave. SE, according to AP. 

Metropolitan Police blocked off the 2800 block of M St. NE to investigate that shooting in the daylight, and the area was expected to remain closed throughout the morning rush.
