The presidential election may be a year away, but things have been heating up among the parties nonetheless, and both sides are bringing the fight to the D.C. region today. Presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell will greet volunteers in Fairfax County this morning, and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley is hosting a rally for President Obama later today, according to the Associated Press.

At GOP headquarters in Fairfax County, Romney and McDonnell will thank volunteers for their 'get out the vote' efforts for the upcoming legislative elections in Virginia. Republicans are hoping to capture the state senate in Virginia; they already control the state house.

McDonnell is considered a viable vice presidential contender and he has yet to endorse any of the presidential hopefuls in his party. The two GOP headliners will also do some fundraising elsewhere in Northern Virginia.

Not to be outdone, Democrats will be doing some stumping of their own across the river. O’Malley will join the head of the Democratic National Committee Debbie Wasserman Schultz for a rally at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring this evening. It's an effort to show support for President Obama and Democratic candidates running in 2012.
