The D.C. social services nonprofit So Others Might Eat (SOME) is celebrating today's opening of a housing development in D.C. that aims to provide safe and affordable housing for dozens of homeless men and women. The building, called Bedford Falls, will provide what the group calls "dignified living" for people who don't have a place to call home.

Bedford Falls offers housing to 78 homeless men and women. SOME says it's now about a third of the way toward its goal of offering 1,000 units of affordable, accessible housing for homeless people.

Under the initiative, SOME has developed 10 properties in all, serving hundreds of families, children and single adults. Additional housing units are in the works, along with a family community center.

The properties that SOME acquires are generally abandoned and in severe disrepair. The program offers a stable residence with supportive services including physical, emotional, and social resources for tenants, all designed to help residents achieve greater independence.
