The bargaining committee representing 12,000 office cleaners in the Washington and Baltimore areas has reached a tentative contract agreement with the organization representing the area's major commercial cleaning companies. The deal, if ratified by the union membership, averts a planned strike that could have disrupted cleaning service to many buildings around the region.
The workers clean office buildings in Baltimore, Montgomery County, Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. The Service Employees International Union says it reached a deal with the Washington Service Contractors Association a day before the workers were set to strike.
If ratified by the workers, the four-year agreement would provide an average yearly pay raise of about 4 percent and maintain a core set of benefits.
The county government has purchased four drones for use by its fire department and innovation office, but bureaucracy is keeping them grounded for now.
