This year would have been Woody Guthrie's hundredth birthday. But the famous folk musician lives on in Theater J's production of Woody Sez: The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie. Four musician-actors, led by David Lutken, wield no fewer than 15 instruments as they storm through 25 of Guthrie's best-known songs, while recounting his life story — from his childhood in Oklahoma, to his rise as a leftist folk hero. The show runs tomorrow through December 2nd.

For a bit more Americana, the Smithsonian American Art Museum has a new exhibition on the Civil war and American art. This isn't a bunch of grand battle scenes, but rather, a collection of 75 paintings and photographs, from landscapes to portraits, all grappling with the war's effect on the nation, as it was happening. The exhibition includes the work of some the greatest artists of era, like landscape painter Sanford Gifford who carried a sketch book and musket while serving in the Union Army. The show runs through April 28th.
