(Oct. 6-Jan. 6) Per Kirkeby

Per Kirkeby is one of Europe's most celebrated living artists, and something of a Renaissance man. The Dane is an accomplished painter, sculptor, filmmaker, writer, and - at times - geologist. The Phillips Collection in Northwest opens the most comprehensive exhibition of his work in the U.S. to date tomorrow. Twenty-six richly layered paintings and 11 striking bronze models are displayed through early January.

(Oct. 5-6) Celebrating with Sun Boxes

Artisphere in Arlington turns two this week, and it's celebrating with Sun Boxes. The solar-powered sound installation features twenty speakers that aim to transform outdoor spaces into rich sonic landscapes. You can walk through the installation today at Artisphere's Freedom Park or tomorrow at Central Space across from the Rosslyn Metro.

(Oct. 6) From Bach to his boys

If you feel like you've seen every possible permutation of Bach performed live, there's something that might be new for you Saturday night at St. John's Norwood Parish in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
