(Sept. 17) Have you ever heard of the Emancipation Proclamation?

Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation 150 years ago this week, plus it's Constitution Day, so what better time to reflect on the import of the executive order? If you do your best reflecting in big groups, the National Endowment for the Humanities holds Emancipation Nation at the Lincoln Memorial today at 4. The hour-long commemoration includes readings, dance, and musical performances.

(Sept. 17) The Gathering of the Wordsmiths

Two celebrated poets drop by Washington's Folger Shakespeare Library tonight to recite, sign and wine. Carl Phillips and Eduardo C. Corral explore the human condition in verse beginning at 7:30.

(Sept. 17-Dec. 17) One for the Godfather of Go-Go

Go-go music was the vessel through which Chuck Brown did his exploring of the human condition. The Godfather of Go-go is gone now, but his spirit lives on with Wind Me Up, Chuck! Mondays, kicking off today at Howard Theatre in Northwest. George Clinton helps out this time, and the celebration continues every Monday through mid-December.
