(June 16) Architecture as Environment

Kevin Roche has been creating architectural masterpieces and solving design challenges for decades. Among the Irish-born American's best-known works are the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Lafayette Tower here in the District. Architecture as Environment is a exhibition of the modernist's drawings, photos, and models opening at the National Building Museum Saturday. Together, the works explore how Roche has approached massive building projects while respecting civic concerns.

Local sculptor Megan Mueller creates landscapes and natural forms, but with a deeply personal and abstract twist. Her drawings, watercolors, and sculptures are collected for I built this for you, a site-specific installation at Flashpoint Gallery in Northwest through mid-July.

(June 17) Doing knit in public

If you like to do your building in public, The Textile Museum hosts the World Wide Knit in Public Day for the second year this Sunday. The entire Museum and its gardens are opened up to anyone who wants to mingle while interlocking.

A 3-D printer is being credited with helping to save an Ohio baby's life, after doctors "printed" a tube to support a weak airway that caused him to stop breathing. The innovative procedure has allowed Kaiba Gionfriddo, of Youngstown, Ohio, to stay off a ventilator for more than a year.
