(Sept. 27) Marnie Stern
Marnie Stern is something of a rarity in the world of independent rock music. The New Yorker manages to sound hairier than hair metal and artier than most art rock bands. Plus, her guitar playing is tops: Stern uses finger tapping and looping pedals to flesh out her sound. The New York Times called her 2007 debut the “most exciting rock and roll album of the year.” You can see what the hype is about tonight at Red Palace in Northeast Washington.

(Sept. 27-Nov. 12) Contrasts
Contrasts is a collection of photos by Andrew Zimmermann opening today at Artisphere in Arlington. The local photographer presents images of Colorado’s Fort Range – half of them taken in winter and the other half in summer. Zimmermann uses traditional equipment and darkroom processes to emphasize the changing forms of light, perception and landscape. 

(Sept. 27-Oct. 9) Fahrenheit 451
Bethesda’s Round House Theatre stages Fahrenheit 451 through October 9th. Ray Bradbury’s tale of a dystopian future in which firemen burn books in the streets is loyally presented with special effects and digital projections.

Artist Philip Haas has taken those portraits out of museums, reinterpreting them as colossal statues that interact with the natural environment.
