Those hoping to take the Metro to Reston will likely have to wait until the Summer.

For a third time, officials say construction delays will push back the scheduled opening of a $2.8 billion extension of the region's Metrorail system in Northern Virginia.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is responsible for overseeing construction of the Silver Line, announced Monday that the contractor still has significant work to do.

The contractor claimed earlier this month that its work was substantially complete, but MWAA says the contractor came up short on seven of 12 categories, including problems with its train control system and escalators.

"It's our determination that in a number of areas, they have been unable to achieve the level of completion that we expect," says Paul Nowakowski, executive director of the project.

The Silver Line, which runs from Reston through Tysons Corner, was originally supposed to open to riders by the end of 2013.

Officials offered no revised timetable for an opening date, but it is likely to be four months or longer.
