Gary Maynard, head of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, is leaving the job after serving as head of the department since 2007.

Gov. Martin O'Malley has tapped Gregg Hershberger to take over. Hershberger is the deputy secretary of operations for the department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and has more than 31 years of experience.

O'Malley commended Maynard for reducing violence in the state prison system. During Maynard's tenure the state closed the outdated Maryland House of Correction in 2007.

O'Malley's administration was criticized this year after a federal indictment of 25 people, including 13 correctional officers, at the Baltimore City Detention Center. Last month, 19 more people, including 14 current or former correctional officers, were charged.
