D.C., Maryland Leaders To Announce Coordinated Minimum Wage Effort

Lawmakers are pulling for a minimum wage increase to $11.50 an hour.

Lawmakers from D.C., Prince George's County and Montgomery County are coordinating efforts to pass an increase in the minimum wage for the region. Later today, local leaders make a joint announcement about plans.

The goal is to level the playing field between the surrounding areas. There doesn't appear to be any effort in Virginia, however, to follow suit.

In D.C., the focus on a minimum wage increase emerged after the D.C. Council's attempt to require a living wage bill for large retailers such as Walmart was vetoed. To soften the blow, Mayor Gray, as well as at least three council members, have proposed separate measures for an across-the-board wage increase.

A final bill will be hashed out in committee and sent to the council for a vote.

The proposals in Prince George's County and Montgomery County have called for a gradual increases in the minimum wage to $11.50.
