Eastern Shore Delegate Has An Eye On The State Senate

Voters in Maryland may not be thinking about the 2014 election just yet, but some politicians have already announced plans to join the race.

Mike McDermott is the current Republican delegate on the lower eastern shore of Maryland.

He’s a longtime police officer, and the former mayor of Pocomoke City.

McDermott announced this week that he will be running for state senate, most likely against current Democratic state senator Jim Mathias, who is also a former delegate and a former Eastern Shore mayor.

And while the two politicians may have taken similar paths, McDermott believes his ideals are much more in line with the majority of folks here on the Eastern Shore, and he’s confident he can win.

The matchup could shine a spotlight on the Eastern Shore's political makeup.

The race pits a staunchly republican candidate against a self-proclaimed conservative Democrat, one who represents a district where more than 40 percent of registered voters are Republicans.
