Milk crates are on the list of bulk rigid plastics which can now be recycled in Montgomery County.

Residents of Montgomery County can add more items to the list of things that can be recycled.

By the end of this decade, the county wants 70 percent of all trash to be recycled. Many items were added to the recycling list today, but those must actually be dropped off at a facility in Derwood and not into the individual blue recycling bins many residents received from the county for their homes or apartments.

Those new recyclables include what are called "bulk rigid plastic items," such as laundry baskets, garbage cans, pet carriers, lawn furniture, and toys. Any plastic containers for chemicals, pesticides, or motor oils must still be put into the regular trash and cannot be recycled.

The next step in recycling will center on food, as a county program will be unveiled next week which hopes to collect edible, unused food so it can be distributed to shelters and food banks.

The full list of qualifying bulky rigid plastics is available on the Montgomery County website (pdf).
