Students Participate In Virginia Language Academy

From day one, about 165 students at the Virginia Language Academy at Washington and Lee University were only allowed to speak French, Spanish or German. To avoid hearing or seeing English, they agreed to give up their cell phones, laptops and iPads.

If you're someone who struggled to learn a foreign language, that might sound like a nightmare, but these kids began to dream in the language of their choice, and they were thrilled.

"I can see that I'm starting to think in Spanish, and that's the best part of the academy," says Andreas Tabura, from Centreville.

"I don't have to work to translate from English," says Nadej Aokie from McLean. "I've learned lots of words, and I can make conversation. I know my Spanish is getting better."

After language classes in the morning, students continue to speak French, Spanish or German while taking part in a range of activities, such as art, dance, sports or drama.
