Pepco customers in Maryland will soon be paying more on their monthly bills.

Maryland's Public Service Commission has approved a rate increase that Pepco sought, which will add about $2.41 to the average residential customer's monthly bill.

The hike is about half of what the utility requested. The PSC agreed with Pepco that the money was needed for reliability investments.

Pepco also wanted a "grid resiliency" charge, which would have netted them $192 million, but the PSC only granted them $24 million. There was swift reaction from Montgomery County, where exasperation with Pepco is high because of the utility's slow restoration of power following thunderstorms in recent years.

Council member Roger Berliner, one of the utility's harshest critics, said at best Pepco deserved only a tenth of what it sought in rate hikes, arguing the utility must improve its performance first before it can charge more.
