Artist Clad In Spiderman Costume Honored By D.C. Council

The D.C. Council has a full plate for its last legislative session before a two-month summer recess, but it did take a few minutes today to recognize Spiderman. Well, kind of.

During its morning meeting, the Council granted a ceremonial resolution to Mingering Mike, a D.C.-born artist whose large collection of album covers—painted under the guise of his invented identity as a soul superstar—will go on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2015.

Mingering Mike's—born Mike Stevens—work has been highlighted by the New York Times, New Yorker and Washington City Paper, and more recently he has been busy painting portraits of the city's legislators.

Dressed as the crime-fighting superhero Spiderman, Mike had this to say after receiving the honor from the city's legislators: "We need art and music in our lives."
