Play associated audio

About 60 people are recovering from injuries after a car drove into a group of hikers on Saturday during the Hikers Parade at the Trail Days festival in Virginia.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in Damascus, a town in Washington County, Va. Authorities say the injuries ranged from critical to superficial. Three of the victims were flown by helicopter to regional hospitals. Another 12 to 15 were taken by ambulance. The rest were treated at the scene, about a half-hour east of Bristol.

One witness reports the car came suddenly from a side street. Authorities are still investigating, but Harris says they believe the driver, described as an elderly man, might have suffered a medical emergency before the accident.
