Democrat Terry McAuliffe has inched ahead of Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli in the race to be the commonwealth's next governor.
A new poll from Quinnipiac University gives McAuliffe a 43-38 lead over Cuccinelli, the first time any candidate has gained any type of edge. Previous polls were coming in at statistical tie.
Both men are easily winning their respective party's voters, with margins of over 80 percent, while independent voters are split right down the middle. However, 17 percent of voters are still undecided, and they will most like provide the keys to the governor's mansion to the eventual winner.
Nearly 1,300 registered Virginia voters were polled, and the margin of error is plus or minus 2.7 percent.
