Under the bill, new handgun owners will have to submit fingerprints to the state police before getting a license.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley today signed a sweeping gun control bill that was ushered through the General Assembly in the wake of the December 2012 Newtown massacre.

The bill bans 45 assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, as well as institutes some of the strictest licensing in the country, making future handgun owners submit fingerprints to the state police before they can get a license to get a gun.

Supporters, like O'Malley, highlighted that part of the bill this morning. "States with similar licensing provisions have substantially lower gun death rates than states that do not, so if we want better results we need to make better choices," he said.

Opponents have vowed to fight the law in the courts and at the polls, as the NRA says it will file a lawsuit against the measure and a woman from Montgomery County says she will start a petition drive to get the matter before voters next year. If she is successful in getting the measure on the ballot, that means the law will be delayed from being implemented on October 1 of this year as is scheduled now.
