Montgomery County Fire Department responded to the scene of a fire at the Silver Spring Metro station.

A fire on a train at the Silver Spring Metro shut down service on the Red Line between Takoma and Forest Glen during rush hour on Tuesday evening.

Witness Megan Miner describes what she saw: "I saw a fire start on the tracks. It was a couple quick explosions that were like electrical explosions that came up from it looked like underneath the wheels on the middle car."

The Montgomery County Fire Department is on the scene. Assistant Chief Scott Graham says the cause is a possible connector shoe fire. No injuries have been reported. There were no passengers aboard the train at the time of the incident.

Dan Stessel, spokesman for the transit authority, says smoke was seen coming from a train. He says service was stopped on the Red Line between Takoma and Forest Glen.

Limited rail service has since been restored between Takoma and Forest Glen, with single tracking bypassing the Silver Spring station. Shuttle buses are operating between Silver Spring and Forest Glen stations.
