Sections of the Commons in the Smithsonian Castle will be closed due to sequester cuts.

Visitors to three Smithsonian buildings will see the effects of the sequester starting tomorrow.

Due to budget cuts mandated by Congress, Smithsonian officials plan to close sections of three buildings starting tomorrow:

  • A small exhibit space in the National Museum of African Art.
  • Some sections of the Hirshhorn Museum displaying parts of its permanent collection.
  • The Commons area of the Smithsonian Castle. That area shows objects from every Smithsonian museum.

No major exhibitions will close.

They'll stay that way until September 30, or until Congress acts on the sequester.

Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough told Congress this month the budget cuts forced a reduction in the Smithsonian's security contract, resulting in those gallery closures.

All major exhibits will remain open to the public.
