The Silver Spring Transit Center is already two years behind schedule.

Metro officials say it will not operate the Silver Spring Transit Center as planned because construction and design flaws make it too expensive to maintain, even if those mistakes are fixed. The three-level bus and train hub is over-budget and already more than two years behind schedule.

Repairs are expected to take at least another year. Transit officials say it still plans to operate Metrobus service from the center, but won't pursue inter-city bus operations there.

The county's general service director says if Metro breaks the 2008 agreement, the opening could be delayed further. It's not clear who would operate the center if Metro doesn't.
