Federal Indictment Highlights Out Of Control Baltimore Prison

Play associated audio

A federal indictment handed down yesterday in Baltimore paints a picture of an out of control prison in charm city where the inmates were living a charmed life.

Thirteen female corrections officers at the Baltimore City Detention Center have been charged with federal racketeering. The indictment accuses the officers of helping a national criminal gang called the Black Gorilla Family run a highly profitable drug dealing and money laundering operation out of the jail.

The officers were reportedly given cash and allowed access to luxury vehicles in return for sneaking cell phones, drugs and other contraband into the jail for inmates, who then sold that contraband for triple or more of their street value.

The indictment says officers also engaged in sex with gang leaders, and one of the gang members also impregnated four officers. Federal officials were very critical of the Maryland State Prison System, and the case is an embarrassment for Gov. Martin O'Malley.

The Maryland agency that oversees state prisons is promising a shakeup.
