Fairfax County Public Schools will be getting a new superintendent this summer.

A Texas educator has been selected to head one of the largest public school systems in America.

Karen Garza, 50, will succeed Jack Dale as superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools this summer. Garza is currently superintendent of Lubbock Independent School District in Lubbock, Texas. Dale has been at the helm of Fairfax schools for nine years.

A Texas native, Garza currently oversees 30,000 students. She began her career 26 years ago as a teacher. In Fairfax County, she will lead a school system with 181,000 students.

The Fairfax County School Board will take a final vote on Garza's approval this month. Contract negotiations will begin in a few weeks.
