Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown cast his ballot early in November, and most assume that he'll be on the top of the ticket in Maryland late next year.

State lawmakers in Maryland are done for the year. By the time they convene next January, the race to replace Gov. Martin O'Malley will be in full swing.

One of the worst kept secrets in Maryland politics is expected to be spilled soon from Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who is certainly going to run to replace his boss. For now, however, he has refrained from making any commitments.

"I've really enjoyed my seven sessions as lieutenant governor. I think we've been able to accomplish a lot, building great schools and keeping college affordable," Brown says. "I'm certainly looking at opportunities to continue serve the people of Maryland. And I'll be making some time soon an announcement on whether I'll be running for governor."

Once Brown officially gets in the Democratic primary, his top likely opponent for the nomination is sure to follow: Attorney General Doug Gansler.  Other Democrats mentioned as possible candidates include Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.

One the Republican side, Harford County executive David Craig and Frederick County Supervisors President Blaine Young are considering gubernatorial runs.
