Senate lawmakers are working on key pieces of the gun control legislation.

The Maryland legislature has enacted a tough new gun law, but now eyes in the region are turning to Congress once again in hopes of national gun control legislation.

To the dismay of gun control advocates, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already stripped out an assault weapons ban and a limitation on rounds per clip. Now reports are swirling around Capitol Hill that the Senate proposal to have universal background checks is also getting watered down. But Brina Milikowsky with Mayors Against Illegal Guns disputes the claim.

"As with most things in Washington, the rumors aren't true," she says. "Maryland's legislature has approved a stricter gun law that requires fingerprinting before any gun purchase."

Vincent DeMarco, the President of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence, says even without the fingerprinting requirement, Congress can take a big step toward reducing illegal guns.

"Maryland has had universal background checks since the mid-90s, and they work to keep people from getting guns who shouldn't get them," says DeMarco.

Senate leaders could unveil their new gun control legislation as early as next week.
