Election night in Salisbury, Md., went to Mayor Jim Ireton.

Voters in Salisbury have re-elected the city's first openly gay mayor to another term by a convincing 2 to 1 margin. The results of yesterday's election may spark other major changes in the Eastern Shore's largest city.

The party ran long into the night for incumbent mayor Jim Ireton and returning councilwoman Shanie Shields who, along with newcomer to the council Jake Day, crushed their opposition to win the three available posts in last evening's election.

Ireton was jubilant in victory but seemed focused on the future in his speech to hundreds of supporters.

"Salisbury spoke loud and clear today that they want progress over pontification and backbone over blogging," Ireton says.

Day's victory over council president Debbie Campbell marks a shift in the council majority, as many believe Ireton will now have the votes he needs to move his agenda forward.

Ireton's opponent, conservative blogger Joe Albero, was humble in defeat, and says he is considering shutting down his blog and moving his family to the Carolinas.

"There's a very strong possibility, because I can't see Salisbury moving forward, I really can't," Albero says.

Less than 18 percent of the voting base came to the polls, but the ones who did, make it very clear what and whom they want to lead in Salisbury.
