At least one patient was in critical condition after the fire in Silver Spring.

At least one person is in critical condition Tuesday morning after a two-alarm fire broke out in an apartment building in Silver Spring, Md., on Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out just after 6:45 a.m., according to Scott Graham with Montgomery County Fire and EMS, when firefighters were called to the 200 block of Silver Spring Avenue.

"They arrived on the scene with a heavy volume of fire coming from the sixth floor of an apartment building," Graham says. "At that point, they called for a second alarm. There were numerous rescues and removals of occupants, some of whom were patients that were injured."

Graham did not have an exact number of injured residents, though he said they did range from a priority one, a patient in critical condition, to those suffering from less-severe smoke-related injuries.

With the fire under control, RideOn buses have been brought in to keep displaced residents warm as building management and the Red Cross work to find them more permenant shelter.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
