The first of Arlington's "super" bus stops cost the county more than $1 million to build.

Arlington County has halted a plan to build 23 "super" bus stops after the first one cost $1 million.

The "super stops" were designed to serve passengers on buses on Columbia Pike, as well as passengers on Arlington's planned streetcar line. The first stop at Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Drive took 18 months and $1 million, drawing outcry.

In a statement Friday, County Manager Barbara Donnellan said the county would reassess the design. She says she has heard the community's concerns about the design and cost and will look for ways to reduce the costs.

After the first stop opened March 11, commuters told The Washington Post the cost was "ridiculous" and "an outrage." Transportation officials said it's an investment in the area's transportation infrastructure.
