National Cathedral Dean Gary Hall provided hopeful words in his Easter sermon for the Newtown victims' families.

National Cathedral Dean Gary Hall has been an outspoken national voice for tighter gun control, ever since the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. in December. In an Easter sermon yesterday Hall reminded those in attendance of the suffering gun violence has caused in recent months.

Gary Hall took the reigns at the National Cathedral in October. Just months later, the Newtown, Connecticut massacre shook the nation, and Hall wasted no time making gun control his issue. In a sermon the Sunday after the shooting, he vowed the gun lobby was no match for the cross lobby.

This Sunday, Hall struggled to square Easter's message of renewal with the ongoing suffering of families who have lost loved ones to gun violence.

"Now, here we are at Easter, Christianity's happiest and most joyful and holiest day," says Hall. "What in the world does Easter have to say to the families of Newtown?"

While he admitted pulpit consolation can come cheap, Hall offered words of hope for those families. "Easter is about the life that emerges from death, it is about the joy that emerges from sorrow. It is about the courage that can come forth from fear."

Hall avoided any direct mention of politics in the sermon, but in the past, he's spoken out for a range of gun control measures, including one of the most controversial: a ban on assault weapons proposed by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California.
